Brand Work | I #KINDA applied for a job!

brand work

Quick update. This isn’t my usual type of post. Normally I plan, research, write and edit my posts to make them as interesting and useful as possible. But, at the start of this week, my wife gave birth to our second Daughter so things are a little chaotic in our lives.

However, I did want to share a little update with you.

I have been cultivating a relationship, online, with a brand for quite some time. It’s a brand that I’ve wanted to work with for ages and I think I’ve got a real shot of making some headway.

I hate it when people spam you with requests. You probably know what I mean if you’re on Instagram at all. That out of the blue message, “This is great stuff. You have a good eye. Check out my feed and give me a follow!”

how to grow your instagram

Terrible approach. I guess they think they are being direct, but there isn’t a connection and there is nothing in it for me.

I put in a lot of time chatting casually with them on Instagram, even getting an invite to join them on one of their photoshoots. But, there comes a time when you have to bite the bullet and ask for what you want.

I’d been putting it off for a while. My reason was that I wanted to craft the perfect pitch email. I procrastinated over and over. The only reason that this happens (at least to me) is when I’m afraid. Afraid that they will say, “No” and I will be rejected. As a creative person, I find this very difficult. You are presenting work that you have put a lot of thought, love and effort in to, for someone else to judge how good it is.

But fear is no excuse for inaction!

Usually, there is more fear attached when something is more worthwhile. So, I sent in my email.

What Am I Wanting?

This is a key question. You need to know what you are hoping to get out of this situation. For me, I want to get a face to face meeting to discuss being a brand ambassador. Being able to produce content for a brand is a win-win. The brand will get some awesome content that resonates with their audience and I will reach a wider audience. Also, I will be able to show other brands that I have existing relationships with others.

If it is your intention to find a new client, I’d recommend you take a look at this article on Pricing Your Work.

What’s In It For Them?

Brand Work

This is, perhaps, the most important question you need to answer.

No one cares about you!

They have no need for you unless you show them. You need to identify a problem that you think they have and how you (alone) can solve it.

For this brand, I saw that their branded content was the result of a one-off photo shoot. They would shoot a library of images and then drip feed them out into their social media feed. The make their content go further they publish user-generated content, but it doesn’t have their product in it.

My solution is that if I were a brand ambassador, I can produce user-generated content that features their brand. Having a working relationship with a brand that would allow me to submit Speculative work (On Spec) for them to use or ignore is where I want to be.

But a relationship like this only works if it works for both parties.

Brand Work Going Forward

I’m always on the hunt for content opportunities and ways to reach a wider audience. But, I’m also very conscious of my time. I spent years exchanging my time for money (working) and I don’t’ want to repeat it. Finding ways to make money that don’t involve swapping seconds for cash.

Working with a brand like this is a way for me to get content and reach a different audience. I’m not looking to work for them, but to build my audience, my reach and my reputation.

Exciting Times Are Ahead

I’ll post an update if I hear back from them (and even if I don’t, I’ll let you know how I chased it up). I’m looking forward to a few interesting projects in the next few months.

Thanks for reading this far. I hope you found it interesting. How did you break into brand work? Do you have any tips you can share? Let us know in the comments below. Or drop me a message on Instagram or Twitter.
